Mount Vernon High School Gymnasium and Field House Modernization Project

After more than a decade of planning, much needed renovations are taking place at the Mount Vernon High School gymnasium and field house. Originally built in 1950, the gymnasium was last upgraded 28 years ago when the field house was added. Over the years, these buildings have served as classroom space and recreational and athletic competition venues for the district and the community. The $9.4 million project, awarded to low bidder Colacurcio Brothers Construction, is designed to replace mechanical and electrical systems and roofing, improve seismic integrity, reconfigure spaces to allow for more efficient use, and add a new classroom. The wooden bleachers and trim in the main gym will be refinished to maintain the current look and feel of the facility.
Funding for the project comes without local tax impact through a $3.9 million zero-interest Qualified Zone Academy Bond program administered by the federal Department of Education, and $5.5 million in state construction matching funds.
